Slightly Discombobulated Adventures of a Novice Poker Player
Join me on my trek to Poker stardom! I am L8Bloomer. I work 40 hours a week at a “regular” job, have my awesome son three evenings, one day, and one night a week, and still find time to win money playing poker online! I enjoy playing online Texas Hold’em poker more than anything else.

This is my Hold’em Blog. In fact, I only blog about No Limit (or NL) Hold’em. It is not my purpose to become famous (yes it is), or make lots of money (riiiiiight!), or help you become a better player (although that would be cool by me if you did), or pick up hot chicks (I may be 40, but…). My sole purpose is to become a better Hold’em player. I find that anything I teach, I become better at. So I write this purely for selfish reasons. Just want to make sure I get that out in the open

Hey – leave comments! I read them. And sometimes, I respond to them. And don’t forget to check out the weekly donk2shark on the sidebar over there on the left side. It is a fun time for all!
In a Very Deep, Dark Place with Poker
Poker and I are in a very deep, dark place. I have made a total ass of myself with my online friends. I am sincerely just about ready to quit the game. But I have decided that as long as I have this bankroll, I am going to play it. And I am going to continue to play within my bankroll. For that reason alone, it should last forever, even if I end up at the .01/.02 limit games. I think I can break out of this. However, I am going to do it by myself. I am going into my cave, so to speak. No chat, no nothing – just me and poker. Duking it out for first prize.

donk2shark will continue on Thursdays, but I may not be playing. Sorry. Just gotta get me together first. I hope the rest of you can carry it on while I am away.
How Eleven Weeks Humbled Me
You know what happened eleven weeks ago? I won $5.400. I was on top of the world. Pretty impressed with myself. I had a huge bankroll, by my terms. I could just gradually build my bankroll by maintaining it in SNGs and building it with big tourney wins. Great plan in theory. Except for one thing. Sometimes you don’t get the cards or play them right, or both. In my case, it was both.

Starting in January, I had an awesome run throught the end of July. I was on top of the world. I was ranked one of the best SNG players on Stars for awhile. Top 20. I thought I had arrived. I thought it was all uphill from there. It may be uphill, but it is starting with a huge slide. An eleven week slide. A slide that does not appear to be over yet.

What happened? It was a combination of things, first, pokerstars is conspiring against me because I have been too successful lately. Also, my tables have been stocked by pokerstars with donkeys who will call anything raise. Thirdly, I had made a recent withdrawal and the next day pokerstars had a new software upgrade that was designed specifically to identify me as a good player who needed to be put in his place.

What??? You don’t believe me??? Thank gawd!!!

Seriously, what did happen. Well, one thing I have realized is that I was quite lucky, in spite my success, for eight months. I did play well, but I had some pretty miraculous finishes in several tournaments. And, well, because I was lucky, my luck finally caught up with me. How do I know I was lucky? Well, I was maintianing a 32% ROI in $30 SNGs. Over the long haul, that is not a mathematically sustainable ROI over the course of 1000 games or more. THIS was VERY difficult for me to accept, as you might imagine. And I probably would never have accepted it if not for my mastermind group. In fact, I almost left the group because of it. So, in the first, say, three weeks of this slump, I was in denial. I just believed I was unlucky – I was, but I was also lucky… before I got unlucky. Better to be lucky than good, yes? NO!!! Definitely better to be good. I am glad I was lucky for awhile. But luck is not sustainable.

Backtrack a bit. I was a broke player for the first 12 months I played, break even for three months, and positive for eight. Yes, I paid my dues before I saw some success, but I was NOT a true student of the game. I read books, but not that frequently. I mostly learned just from playing – baptism by fire. Gut instinct. i did not study my hand histories after I played. I did not read strategy tips regularly. This happened right up through the third week of this slump. THEN, because of the success of my mastermind group, I became MORE of a student of the game. I am still nowhere near the student I want to be, but I am closer. I still don’t study my hand histories everyday like I should, but I know that when I do, it is going to make me a better player. I still don’t read a chapter from a www.twoplustwo.com book everyday, but I know that when I do, it will make me a better player. I still don’t post in my blog everyday, but when I do, I know it will make me better. I am better, but doing these things consistently is going to make me MUCH better.

Okay, so I realized what I needed to do three weeks after my slump started, so why no improvement yet? Because, “It happens.” WB tells me that every chance he gets. It just happens. He tells me I am a better player, I am just not hitting the cards or the flops now. The frustration has built, and I am the first to admit that it has tilted me at times, and I have made poor choices. That just deepens the slump.

I am sure it is not lost on many of my most loyal readers that I have not been posting much lately. I hate writing about bad stuff. I love bragging. But I can’t help you all if I don’t share the good with bad, right? And I have let down some of you in a bad way – promising interviews to the winners of the donk2shark, then not delivering. I am sorry. I will not let it happen again. I will be updating everything this week – no poker till Sunday this week. Should give me enough time to get up to date.

Pupkin (aka Snagglefood) of www.plusev.net and I have decided to combine our Sunday private tourneys. We both were catering to the European players (his readership is 60% European). Since we start our games 30 minutes apart, it just seemed logical to combine the two. So I will be promoting from here, and he from his blog. Should be a great time, especially since Pupkin and I publically hate each others guts. The Thursday night donk2shark will continue as always!

Okay, got side-tracked there a bit. Here is the part I don’t want to really talk about. The last eight weeks has filled me with rage at my misfortune. Unhealthy rage. I scream, I pound on my desk till my hands and wrists are sore, I want to break things. It is sick. But domination is not winning for me of late. As much as I understand conceptually that, “It happens,” I don’t like it emotionally. Three people have come to me in the last two days and said, “You need to take some time off.” I figured that probably meant that I needed to take some time off. So no playing till Sunday. Play with son, Study, blog, sleep, work, exercise, repeat.

Rage has been a problem for me on and off throughout my life. Only therapy, and more recently, meditation, has been able to help me control it. It may come as no surprise that I haven’t meditated much since I started playing poker. Who has time for meditation when you could be playing a poker game!!! But now, I have no choice. If I don’t get a handle on my rage, I am going to continue tilting on occassion. Tilting, I have found, is not very profitable… To say the least!

Wish me luck – this poker thing is harder to make work than i could have ever imagined.

Oh, I leave you with a quote from WB – can’t quite conceptualize if myself yet, but if he says it is so, I know it is:

“If you can fall in love with the dark side of the game, then you understand it.”
DemonEyez views himself as the weekly returning champion for the donk2shark, so it is only fitting that he is the first interviewee for the donk2shark. This was DemonEyez second win. He is only one of two whom have been repreat winners of the donk2shark.
Took A Step Back to Take a Step Forward
After my $5,400 win on July 28th, I was obviously walking on cloud 9. August brought me back to earth and, so far, it looks like September has gouged my heart out of my chest cavity. But it actually hasn’t, the results only make it seem that way.
Inaugural Euro donk2shark – Ryder Cup of Holdem?
After an unsuccessful attempt last week, I was able to round up enough interested parties for the second attempt at the Inaugural Euro donk2shark. Fourteen players got started, and in honor of the Ryder Cup that had just concluded with Europe trouncing USA in Ireland, we kind of adopted the same mindset, though there was certainly no organized team-building really. But we did end up with some stellar poker. It took over an hour and ten minutes to get to the final table from only FOURTEEN players. That has become a standard expectation in the donk2shark, tight early, and tight late. It is readily apparent that these players have learned a little something from PXF instructors, sheets, johnnybax, and Rizen. I certainly have.
donk2shark 10
We have hit double digits! The 10th donk2shark featured a small but diehard group of regulars. Fourteen players who make up the core of the donk2shark (The competition scares some off, but the desire to see their name emblazoned on the donk2shark Champions List keeps the others coming back. DemonEyez came roaring back from a late bad beat (at the hands of yours truly) in last week’s donk2shark with a vengeance and outlasted both zapper1000, who came in second for the second week in a row, and jhammond10. Three PXFers in the money including Fuzz and Zapper (who really need to get off their duffs – this is a family site! – , stop observing Madden Holiday, and get their website finished!)
Just Getting Started? Think of Poker Like Baseball
I have been playing poker regularly for two years this month. NOTHING cracks me up more when a new player says, “I don’t understand, I am playing good cards, I am getting good reads, I have read all the books (watched all the videos, read all the forums), and I still can’t seem to win.” FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!! YOU JUST GOT STARTED!!! There is a reason that after Doyle Brunson says, “Holdem takes a minute to learn,” he follows it up with, “but a lifetime to master.” I don’t know what it is, but so many people assume that they can watch a couple of hours of WSOP late one night and play a few games of $20 SNGs, and start winning. It just doesn’t work like that. I to that I say, thank gawd! I would hate to put all my hard-earned work to waste if new players could just come in and start beating me left and right. Granted, some genuises are able to join in the game and start playing masterfully soon after starting. But those players are few and far between.
The Old Guy and The New Kid
So one of the fun things about becoming moderately successful at poker is that people start to watch you play because they want to become better players. Or maybe that is just all in my head. I will say however, that being a proponent of “playing within the bankroll” has created been one of my more satisfying endeavors. One of my best online friends, alwaysgqn, is a very good poker player. He and I have been watching each other play for a long time. alwaysgqn is the “Old Guy” in this story – not because he is old, but because he has been playing poker almost as long as me. He had a huge win early in his poker experience, and gradually lost it all. For the greater part of this year, he has been dropping $50 every week or so, playing, in my opinion, games that were out of his bankroll. Mind you, he could play at this level, it is just that variance would rear it’s ugly head and take it all away from him. He became one of those online poker consipiracy theorists we always see saying, “Only on Party Poker” or “RiverStars Special.”
Chipolino beat me in the donk2shark with this hand. Has this become the shark2donk? Out in 22nd of 25. GG me! Twenty-five players – our third highest total. WOW! A Day Away From Poker??? Nope, Two Days
Okay, been running bad. REAL bad. And yesterday was the worst of the bad. Outlasting the downswings is what this game is all about, right? Bankroll is down by 1/3rd since my big win. Can’t complain. I have MOSTLY been playing good cards. Not always, but I let myself donk a few games over the past week. Not recommended at anytime. But we are human.
donk2shark Crowns a New Champion – Snagglefood (a.k.a. Pupkin)
Snagglefood pushed his way to his first win in two tries in the donk2shark this evening. Whenever anyone wondered why he hadn’t pushed all of his chips in the middle in awhile, he would say, “I am not bored enough to push them all in yet. Invariably, on the next hand, he would suddenly become bored and push all his chips in the middle! Finally getting to heads up play after busting out jhammond10 (he created the future donk2shark.com website banner) in third, Snagglefood slowly chipped away at danadeez 2X chip lead. All three players call www.pokerXfactor.com home.

There are literally thousands of gambling sites online. They range from poker sites to real money rummy sites. Every year some close up shop and new ones pop up to replace them. This post will cover the best gambling sites online in 2011. I will cover the major categories:

betting

poker

casino

rummy

Best Betting Sites

This category includes a wide range of betting services. Some betting sites take bets on virtually everything including sports, horse races, MMA and the lottery to name a few. Others specialize in one particular field so determining which one is the best is going to be tough as it all depends on what you want to bet on. Some betting sites also offer better odds than others so that plays an important role in choosing a place to bet. Promotions and bonuses at betting sites can range from mediocre to incredible. I have taken all of these factors in mind or this post.

The top rated online betting sites include many household names. In my opinion I would say that Bodog is the best betting site on the internet today because they take bets on virtually everything. Bodog was one of the first betting companies to offer their services on the web. They offer much more than betting as well. They also have a medium size poker room and world class casino.

Best Poker Sites

The best poker room these days is Full Tilt Poker. They only rank in second place in regards to overall traffic but they offer the best overall experience to small time recreational players and grinders alike.

Best Casino Sites

Online casinos come a dime a dozen but there are several prominent ones that stand above the rest. Bet365 is definitely one of these. The software and game variety is simply superb. Bet365 has been around for a very long time and they have done very well by offering a high quality gambling experience. The Blackjack at Bet365 is one of my favorite games but it is just one out of many. The slot games are also very entertaining and they develop new and exciting games all the time. Progressive jackpots at Bet265 are amongst the largest you will find online or offline.

Best Rummy Sites

The real money online rummy industry is fairly small. Rummy Royal is the most established rummy site online these days. They have the highest traffic and the largest selection of unique rummy games. I personally enjoy the rummy tournaments they host on a regular basis.

It is just like when an author gets stuck in the story and has no clue on how to proceed to the next plot. Comparison can also be made to the motor drivers stuck in a traffic jam from where there is no way out. It would have been a more prudent decision if a proper route was planned beforehand listening to the guidance from the radio traffic channels instead of blaming the traffic jam.

If you hear the losing stories in poker you would invariably hear about the faulty playing where the player is repeating his misjudgment in order to rectify his earlier errors to a winning hand. The player would eventually get more trapped and be wiped out soon. One should be careful from the very beginning by not taking a daring move which could prove to be fatal in the early rounds of the game.

A good player should considerately listen to others when they discuss their weakness or faults in their games. It would be often observed that the fault lies at the early stages of the game and is revealed profoundly with the gradual progression of the game.

The champions regularly appraise their strengths, weaknesses and average playing abilities and improve upon all the three. There could be infinite amount of conditions and approach to a game to achieve great results but the main ploy depends on other phenomena of the human mind.

The game selection or table selection is an essential skill required for the poker player. If a game can be selected according to the capability of the player the chances of winning increases manifold. But that is not the key to success as mentioned earlier

Actually it is not the quantitative ability or the ability to anticipate opposition move or a game selection or a full proof strategy but it is the strength of character which is the main key to success.

It would depend upon the perception of a player whether he would play above his bankroll. If he does not then he could not even think of playing Texas hold’em where the limits are infinite. After some rounds of play he could also even start to tilt or can play continuously losing every round.

The game is not all about that. A sound preparation beforehand and knowing the opponent becomes vital. It may even take months to prepare a sound strategy or to set up the mental frame work. How much could you afford for bankroll is also a vital point to be determined beforehand. With a clear objective and a thorough fundamental base one could overcome the down- and- out performance of a day and have that mental ability to turn around the next day. All the emotional aspects like passion, excitement should be kept well within control. Every action during the game should be an outcome of a solid preparation and strategy.

The skill sets, strategies, methods, mind control all of these should be well coordinated by a champion poker player. The knowledge and principles accumulated over time should be applied aptly to every situation that may arise then only those would be converted to winning strategies.

Thus the methods undertaken coupled with strength of mind would let you master the skills required to be a champion poker player in your own terms.

I used to spend most of my time gambling at online poker rooms. A few weeks ago I was playing some newer poker games like 7-Game Poker and 2-7 single draw alot. I grew somewhat bored with poker so I first gave this online rummy room Rummy Royal a try and I have played every day since. Rummy is a gamer I grew up playing with my family. It never really occured to me that I could play rummy online for real money. I was surprised to find out that rummy is actually 100% legal in most U.S. states, including mine.

The reason for this is that it is classified as a game of skill. I’ve won a couple hundred playing rummy in the last few days, mostly via rummy tournaments. They offer a wide range of rummy variants including gin, traditional rummy and kalooki. Since this change of pace worked out so good I decided to try some other non-poker forms of gambling as well.

I decided to check in on my old account at the only online casino that I know and trust that accepts U.S. players. This is of course Rushmore Online, a well known and well respected casino that boasts over 80 casino games. I started off at the Pontoon tables and worked my way to Face Up 21. As you can see I enjoy blackjack variations. I really didn’t hit anything big until i got a straight flush playing tri card poker. Overall I am up a few hundred there as well so my break from online poker has definitely paid off!

In order to excel at 2-7 single draw poker play, the poker player must change their way of thinking when it comes to a winning hand. The best possible hand in lowball poker is 7, 5, 4, 3, 2 of different suits. The example hand is a surefire winner because it has the lowest possible score, with the seven as the high card. No other player could produce a lower scoring hand. Like regular games of poker, if two or more players have a similar low hand, the lowest high card will win the hand. If a dealt hand exceeds the number of cards in the deck, the discarded cards from re-draws and folded player’s hands will be reshuffled in order to complete the current hand. Please check out the rules of 27 single draw before you play.

No Alcohol

Of course alcohol and poker goes hand in hand, but the more that you imbibe, the greater the risk that you will make common “rookie” mistakes. Don’t be the player who makes foolish decisions because you’re under the influence of alcohol. You are playing to win, and want to have fun at the same time. So if you are going to play for money, it is wisest to keep the alcohol to a minimum or drink a soda, water, or other non-alcoholic beverage while playing.

Know the Game

While it is fun to jump right into 27 Single Draw, take some time for yourself to revisit the rules to refresh your memory of game play. When you review the rules, you will gain an extra mental edge over the other players at the table.

Because of the nature of no limit five card draw, it is often thought of a bluffer’s game, and there are often big bluffs pulled off in no limit games in general. If you plan to use bluffing as part of your no limit five card draw strategy, then being an inconsistent bluffer is important, especially if you are playing with a regular set of poker buddies because it is easy to become familiar with a repeated bluff in this game. Inversely, if you are a regular bluffer, and you do get a good hand and are actually not bluffing, it is easier to build the pot up in five card draw because it may be assumed that you are bluffing and your opponents may go ahead and call your bets. A great bluffing strategy in five card draw no limit is to raise right before the draw, stand pat (take no cards during the draw), and then raise again. This bluff won’t work all of the time, but it will work much of the time because it will be assumed that you have a good hand. You can always choose to muck your hand afterwards.

Being an Observant No Limit Five Card Draw Player

Observing your fellow players is a great way to become a successful no limit five card draw player. Three of a kind is a common winning hand that many players are striving for when they build their hands. If a player draws two cards, they may be already holding trips (three of a kind). Less common in five card draw is the flush or the straight – and a good way to tell if a player around the table is going for a straight, flush, or full house is if they draw only one card during the drawing round – and you can bet that most of the time they won’t draw to what they are looking for. By playing no limit five card draw often, you will learn to recognize certain behaviors and methods of playing among your fellow players that will help you decide what to do next in your own game.

When you play high stakes HORSE poker games you will be laying against some good players. Most players will be seasoned HORSE players or at least have a more then average understanding of all the games and it peculiarities. With that in mind it is important to make plays when you can to maximise your profits. If you hit the nuts on the turn instead of the river you should still bet it. A lot of players at this level will not chase 2 outers if they don’t get the right pot odds. If you want to play horse poker you should go to Pokerstars and use our Pokerstars promo code.
If you play in these games you should not be playing a lot of hands in contrast to low stakes HORSE poker, because the starting hands of your opponents will in general be 18% better then in low stakes games. With this in mind it is important to play only the hands of which you can have a high return on investment possibility. For instance A-2-3 suited in Eights or better will have a higher Return on investment possibility then A-5-9 and should therefore be played stronger and with the intention of winning money. Flops seen in these games can go as low as 39% so you need to be looking at who is consistently in these 39% to determine which players to take on.

The most important thing in deciding hands to play with in 7 card stud is unfortunately never written in stone. If you for instance have 10-J-Q from the start, but 4 other upcards shown are K-K-9-9 then this hand becomes almost useless from the start. So looking at other players hands is vital as well as the “chase factor”. Don’t be prepared to go on a chase for straights. If you hold 3-5-7 it looks nice, but you NEED to hit a 4 and a 6 and then still you only make a small straight. The best 7 card stud starting hand is one consisting of a high pair that can also develop in a different way. Hands like Q-Q-K with 2 hearts leads to possible full houses or trips, but could also lead in this case to straights and flushes. Depending on your table image you might also get away with a steal if you have good drawing cards shown, but this also appears on the quality of you opponents. Sometimes it is better to get paid against the professionals then against amateurs, so don’t be upset if you loose when you went in with the best percentage call.
